ECE R79
Overview
The ECE R-79 regulation issued by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) sets out the principles for approval of steering systems. The purpose of this technical regulation is to establish unified regulations for the adjustment and performance of steering systems installed on road vehicles. Traditionally, steering control is achieved through a forward mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels. However, with the advancement of technology, it is soon possible to have a steering system without such mechanical linkages.
This regulation applies to the following categories of vehicle steering equipment
M category vehicles (vehicles with at least four wheels, electric motors, and used for passenger transportation)
Class N vehicles (vehicles with at least four wheels, electric motors, and used for cargo transportation)
• Class O vehicles (non motorized vehicles with less than four wheels that are towed by motor vehicles and used to carry loads)
