Overview

The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (FMVSS) are the core content of the US automotive technical regulations. FMVSS is developed and implemented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of the United States. They are included in Chapter 571 of Title 49 of the United States Code of Federal Regulations. Any vehicle or equipment component that does not comply with FMVSS shall not be produced for sales purposes, nor shall it be sold or introduced into the US commercial system. The United States adopts a "self certification" system for automotive safety, which means that manufacturers first self declare whether their products meet FMVSS requirements, and the government implements a certification system of post supervision On March 10, 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the Transportation in the United States (DOT) issued the final rule version of the Occupant Protection Safety Standards for Vehicles Without Driving Controls (hereinafter referred to as the "Final Rules").
